Uni student dies after taking class in basketball
A SANDA University student died in the hospital on Monday after he suddenly collapsed in a basketball class, the school announced yesterday.
The sophomore, surnamed Tang, about 20, fell down without being struck and was sent to a nearby hospital but died despite emergency treatment.
Sanda said Tang had finished warm-up exercises before having the basketball class and the school doctors had tried to save him.
It didn't specify the cause of Tang's death yesterday.
Tang's passing shocked his friends and former schoolmates, who remembered Tang as a sturdy young man who was about 1.8 meters tall and good at sports.
"He looked very healthy when I met him last time at our class reunion," said a classmate of Tang's in middle school who declined to reveal her name.
"Tang was in charge of all the sports activities in our class. He played basketball almost every day and attended a lot of sports events on behalf of our class at school sports meets.
"None of our classmates can believe he died suddenly," she said.
Tang's college friends also said on their Weibo accounts that Tang was strong and always helped female students with bags and suitcases on their way home.
Tang's death follows that of a Shanghai Donghua University student who died on November 27 after he collapsed at the finish line of a 1,000-meter running test.
The sudden deaths of two Shanghai students in physical education classes led the public to again question the deteriorating physical abilities of local college students. Some say college students are less disciplined and spend too much time on computer games or karaoke.
