University boss jailed for bribery
The former vice president of Shanghai Ocean University, Li Yanchen, has been sentenced to 10 years and three months in jail and fined 1 million yuan (US$147,000) for taking bribes according to Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People’s Court.
All of Li’s illicit gains will be confiscated.
Between 2002 and 2016, Li took advantage of his positions as vice president of Lixin Accounting College and vice president of Shanghai Lixin University of Commerce (now Shanghai Lixin University of Accounting and Finance) to seek profits for organizations and individuals and took bribes from them directly or through members of his family.
Responsible for matters such as construction, school assets and logistical support, Li offered assistance with tenders for construction projects and business events and received more than 5 million yuan in bribes.
Li’s confession resulted in a more lenient sentence.
The maximum punishment for such offenses is life imprisonment or death.
