University student appeals death sentence for poisoning roommate

A postgraduate student sentenced to death for poisoning his roommate insisted once again today during his appeal that he was only playing a prank, Shanghai Higher People's Court heard.

Lin Senhao, a Fudan medical university student, told the court that he put a toxic chemical into a water cooler as a joke to see how Huang Yang would react on April Fool's Day in 2013.

Huang died from the poison placed in the water cooler on April 16.

Lin admitted he had used the chemical in an experiment on rats in 2011. When he served as a volunteer and had a chance to enter the lab again on March 31, 2013, he took the chemical from a cabinet.

In the first trial, Lin told the court he thought Huang would recover because 58 out of 70 rats injected with the chemical survived the experiment.

Lin held a trivial grudge against Huang.
