Vans to sell water along Bund

MORE vehicles selling drinking water will be added to serve the increasing number of visitors to the Bund, management authorities said today.

The vans will park at Chenyi Square and near the Bund Bull, selling water at about 1 yuan (14 US cents) a bottle and other drinks for between 2 and 4 yuan, said the Bund Management Office.

Visitors have complained that it's hard to find drinking water on the Bund as there are few convenience stores nearby.

Officials said that it was not possible to install drinking water fountains such as those used in the Expo site because of cost.

"We believe that the vehicles will be adequate to meet visitors' needs," said official Zhou Shunguo. "We have carried out a trial on the platform near Nanjing Road E., and the queue for drinks was shorter than that in the Expo site."

Meanwhile, visitors' requests for sun shades on the Bund sightseeing platform was also declined, as officials said the platform, which is a flood-prevention wall, could be endangered by heavy foundations for the shades.
