Vendor admits stabbing official

A street vendor today admitted stabbing an urban management employee dead and offered to try his best to compensate the family at Shanghai No.2 Intermediate People's Court.

Zhang Huijun, a 41-year-old Shaanxi Province native, told the court he very much regretted his actions and felt heartache for the victim's death.

Judges will hand down a verdict after considering Zhang's attitude and the compensation he manages to pay.

On the morning of January 17, two assistants hired by Guangzhong sub-district urban management team were patrolling around Hongkou Stadium when they saw Zhang illegally selling purses at an exit of Metro Line 8.

The two assistants asked Zhang to leave, but he refused. An assistant surnamed Qu started to fight him when Zhang took out a knife and stabbed Qu in the chest.

Qu died at the scene. The other assistant and a security guard at a nearby restaurant tried to stop the fight but were also slightly hurt.

Zhang told the court that he lost control, saying his family was poor and he needed to earn money.
