Video link to stop fraud

LOCAL customers of China Telecom calling the company's service number may soon have a video link to a member of staff, as the company cracks down on fraudsters hijacking its hotline.

The country's leading telecom services provider has announced that it is to launch this service for mobile phone customers in Shanghai.

China Telecom officials said this will help improve security for clients and fight against con artists faking the carrier's official service hotline.

The planned "Visual 10000" hotline is expected to allow mobile phone users to talk to service staff by video link on phone screens, with staff IDs and China Telecom office surroundings visible.

Xu Wei, a telecom engineer, said software has emerged which is believed to have been used by fraudsters in telecom service hotline scams, according to Wenhui Daily.

Making calls processed by the software, the caller's number can appear on the victim's mobile phone as whatever number the fraudster wants - such as 10086 and 10000, the official customer service hotlines for China Mobile and China Telecom.

Some victims have been duped by such virtual numbers and paid up to buy fabricated service packages.

No starting date was given for the Visual 10000 hotline.
