Video-ad chickens fall prey to bitter cold
MOST of the 2,000 new-born chickens that were shipped to the city to be used as prop for a video advertisement have frozen to death in the cold weather, sparking outrage among netizens.
Animal welfare volunteers and netizens rushed to adopt the chickens or despatch them to farmers but only 80 of them managed to survive by yesterday and are now being taken care of at a farmland on Chongming Island.
The episode unfolded after a woman surnamed Zhang published a blog on the popular forum liba.com last Friday, saying that an advertising firm where her husband works had purchased 2,000 new-born chickens to be used as props for a video ad.
Zhang expressed concern that the chickens would probably be left to die after their use in the ad as they can only survive in temperatures of more than 20 degrees Celsius.
She pleaded for help in the blog, which promptly drew a response from netizens and animal welfare volunteers who rushed to help.
An animal welfare group JAR (Jaiya's Animal Rescue) helped the woman get in touch with owners of farmlands in Chongming and finally one of them agreed to adopt the rest of the flock. But only several hundred of the chickens made it to the farmland, but even so, most died in one day and now only about 80 remain.
