Virtual journey through a genius’ mind

A multimedia exhibition on Leonardo da Vinci is to open today in Pudong, one of a series of global events to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of the Italian Renaissance polymath.

“Tribute to da Vinci,” covers 2,000 square meters in Shanghai World Financial Center and features 1,200 high-definition images of da Vinci’s paintings, drawings and engravings. There are also 20 mechanical devices, built according to designs in his notebooks.

Visitors can watch a 45-minute 5D movie, involving light, sound, water, wind and bubbles, about da Vinci’s life, and use virtual reality glasses to learn about the operating principles of the machinery and weapons he designed.

The exhibition is part of a series of events being held around the world by the Leonardo da Vinci Museum. The exhibition in Shanghai highlights science and technology, which meshes with China’s ongoing innovation campaign, said Robert Barsanti, the curator of the museum.

The exhibition starts with 16 copies of da Vinci’s oil paintings such as the “Mona Lisa” and the “Last Supper” where visitors can have a very close look. Texts beside the masterpieces are in both English and Chinese.

Over 100 manuscripts of sketches, machinery, geometry, architecture, anatomy, nature and military engineering are also exhibited.

The exhibition is open to the public on the 4th floor of the center until March 3.
