Wall to wall poser: Spot the difference

A DISTRICT government department was accused of copying a wall design in the city, the Shanghai No.2 Intermediate People's Court said yesterday.

A yellow wall with a distinctive wavy design was built by Shanghai Novidis Architectural Mouldings on Changde Road last April, as part of renovations Shanghai launched for the World Expo.

But three months later, Novidis discovered a similar design on a new wall on Langao Road in Putuo District, built by Putuo's greenery administration. Novidis claimed its design had been copied.

This is the city's first copyright infringement case involving a wall design, the court said.

Novidis told the court the Langao Road wall had exactly the same patterns, except for red decorations, and demanded 50,000 yuan (US$7,840) in compensation from Putuo District's greenery department.

But the defendant claimed its design was ready in April and the curves represented the 18 turns of Suzhou Creek in Putuo District.

If mediation over the dispute fails, the court will announce a verdict at a later date.
