Wartime artillery shells found in sewer in Minhang

FOUR artillery shells were dug out from a sewer in Minhang District yesterday and were removed by bomb disposal experts, Shanghai Morning Post reported today.

A witness surnamed Li said the shells were discovered by a middle-aged worker who was clearing silt from a sewer near the Xinjian River Bridge yesterday morning. He held up one shell, about 40 to 50 centimeters long and 15 centimeters in diameter and said there were more in the sewer.

The man reported to the fire department and an explosion-proof vehicle arrived soon. Some bomb disposal experts dug out three more shells from the sewer. All the rusty shells were later sent to a warehouse for dangerous materials.

A Minhang District almanac writer, surnamed Pang, said the shells might be from the War against Japanese Invasion. But no conclusion can be made before an investigation is done.
