Water main cut, geyser causes problems
A WATER main was broken by excavation work in the city's Lujiazui financial area during rush hours yesterday morning, causing water to gush skyward like a big fountain.
A construction worker at the scene was hit by a stone thrown by the force of the bursting of the water main at Middle Yincheng Road near Puming Road in the Pudong New Area. The injury, however, was not serious, officials said.
The burst of water destroyed a traffic light above it and traffic in the area around the World Financial Center was jammed up for at least two hours.
The driver of the heavy machine that damaged the water pipe, hired by the Shanghai Tianyou municipal company, had no idea of the layout of the pipes in the area where he was working.
"I don't know," said the driver, who was not identified, speaking to Shanghai Television news yesterday. The driver said he had no blueprint of the road and was not told of any pipes to watch for.
"They (the construction company) should definitely be responsible for the accident," a water company emergency official said at the scene.
The water pipe the driver damaged was a 700-millimeter main that transports drinking between networks, not for immediate household supply, said Chen Weijia, a manager of Shanghai Pudong Veolia Co Ltd, which supplies water to the Pudong New Area.
"The water supply for households in the area should not be in short supply because of the accident," Chen said yesterday. "The water pressure might be affected a little, but it will be resumed once we turn off the valve."
The repair work was finished yesterday afternoon.
Last summer, the gas supply of over 800 households in Putuo District was cut off after a gas pipe cracked and caught fire when a water worker put a pipe too close to the gas pipe.
