Water plant shut after waste pollutes river

The Jinshan District government said this morning that the odor some people complained about last night came from oily chemical waste dumped by a company truck into the Jueshigang River in Zhujing Town.

The waste contained chemicals like styrene, officials said.

Police have confined the movement of some company staff who are responsible for the spill while local environment, work safety and water supply departments are taking emergency measures to minimize the impact of the spill, the officials said.

To ensure drinking water safety, authorities have shut down water gates on the river to prevent polluted water from flowing into the Huangpu River. The Maogang Water Plant in neighboring Songjiang District has stopped water supply for a safety check.

The government has sent fire engines to residential areas and industrial parks to supply water.

Some residents in Zhujing Town last night reported that they smelled something like gas and paint, which prompted an official investigation immediately.
