Weakest bear brunt of blazes
THE elderly, children and handicapped people accounted for more than 70 percent of city fire fatalities in the first 10 months of the year, officials said yesterday.
Up to the end of October, blazes claimed 37 lives and left another 43 people injured, said the Shanghai Fire Control Bureau. Half of the fires occurred in residential buildings. "Sometimes fires may not be big but they can still be deadly," said Gu Jinlong, chef engineer with the city fire control authority. Older residents, children and handicapped people find it more difficult to escape the flames, especially in old residential area without basic fire-prevention facilities, said officials. In residential buildings, electrical faults were the main cause of fires, said Gu.
