Weekend forecast calls for rain, thunderstorms
IT has been hard to tell it is still summer judging by the recent weather in Shanghai. Temperatures have been cooler than normal in the past week and the weather bureau said the mercury would continue to be less than average.
Chen Min with the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said there will be more thunderstorms and rain this weekend. The good news is that the temperature will be no more than 32 degrees Celsius this weekend.
The bureau said more rain and temperatures under 35 degrees can be expected in the first half of August.
After a heat wave in the first half of this month, the city has had a relatively cool summer. Yesterday's high was 28 degrees, much cooler than the 40 degrees reached on July 20, which was the second hottest day on record in the city.
The bureau issued a red rainstorm alert yesterday. The storm dumped the most rain on Shanghai this year yesterday afternoon.
The rain challenged the city's drainage system as more than 70 roads in seven districts were flooded with water up to 30 centimeters deep in some areas.
More than 3,000 homes in Luwan, Huangpu, Zhabei and Jinshan districts were flooded with water 5 to 10 centimeters deep.
