West Gate set due to open in October

THE "West Gate to Shanghai" will open in October, when an archway is built at the entrance to the Yingbing No. 1 Road at Hongqiao Airport.

The Changning District government has offered two designs for the gate to the airport, a government spokesperson said this morning.

Both designs highlight local hospitality to visitors and consideration for tourists, the spokesperson said.

The city made the gateway part of the Hongqiao transport hub project in its preparation for the World Expo which will run from May to October next year.

Expo organizers are expecting 70 million visitors during the event.

To make it more convenient for overseas visitors, traffic signs in Chinese and English will be placed around the airport and in Hongqiao and Gubei, which are popular with foreign residents, the spokesperson added.

The authority is considering establishing tourist information desks at the airport.

More than 170 members of the airport's bus section have started a four-week course in English and Putonghua (Mandarin).

The green belt that runs for 60 meters at the airport had been undergoing a face lift by April 27.

The redecorating of buildings along the Yan'an Road W., a major road linking Hongqiao airport with downtown, is entering the final stage. Renovations for greenery and street lighting are also underway in neighboring areas.
