Whistleblower receives reward for reporting corrupt official
A whistleblower in Shanghai was awarded 5,000 yuan (US$785) for reporting an official who took bribes from two companies to help them expand their plant area.
Fengxian District People's Court sentenced the official, surnamed Feng, to three years in prison last month for taking 55,000 yuan in bribes.
Prosecutors said they received the whistleblower's report on September 5. It provided clues for them to investigate Feng's activities between 2008 and 2010.
With the tip off, prosecutors found Feng had helped the two companies expand an illegal area of more than 500 square meters during renovation, which caused financial losses of more than 280,000 yuan to the country and some individuals.
The informer was the fifth tipster in Fengxian District to receive an award this year from prosecutors for helping expose corruption cases.
"We saw an obvious growth in the number of real-name whistleblowers in recent years but anonymous reports still accounted for the majority," said an official surnamed Lian with the Fengxian District People's Procuratorate.
To encourage people to provide their identity when providing a tip, prosecutors have established a series of regulations to protect informers.
