Wife charged with shopping mall murder
A WOMAN who allegedly stabbed her husband's mistress to death in a crowded shopping center was arrested yesterday.
Yuan Xuelan, who surrendered herself to the police four hours after the killing, has been charged with murder by the Minhang District Prosecutors' Office.
On the night of August 12, a woman was waiting for the lift on the ground floor of the Nanfang Entertainment Plaza in Minhang District when Yuan is said to have stabbed her in the neck with a fruit knife.
The victim fell to the ground and Yuan accused the woman of having an affair with her husband before running off, prosecutors said.
"The killing lasted for only a few seconds and the victim even didn't have time to ask for help," said a witness surnamed Cao who called the police. "When onlookers realized what had happened, the killer had run away."
The victim, surnamed Zhou, died from a massive hemorrhage.
Yuan returned home after the killing and told her husband what had happened. He persuaded her to surrender herself to police.
Yuan, 38, who operated an air-conditioner store with her husband, told prosecutors she had seen a message from Zhou asking her husband to meet her at the shopping center.
"I had planned to have a talk with Zhou to tell her to leave my husband alone. If she didn't agree, I planned to threaten her with the knife," Yuan told prosecutors.
"But I was very angry at that time and I stabbed her."
