Woman dies as truck hits sidewalk

A YOUNG woman was killed by a heavy truck yesterday in Putuo District.
The 21-year-old was killed on the sidewalk near her home.
"She was just taking her phone out answering a call and was hit suddenly," said a witness surnamed Wang. "It was so terrible."
The garbage truck swerved and crashed onto the sidewalk to avoid hitting the car in front, witnesses said. The cause of the accident is still under investigation, Putuo District police said.
The tragedy happened about 6:45am on Ningxia Road near Baiyu Road. The truck was following a grey sedan and heading from west to east, witnesses said, when the sedan crossed the double solid yellow line and tried to turn in the middle of the road.
The truck swerved to avoid it and hit the woman on the sidewalk, witnesses said. She died instantly.
The truck knocked down a 4-meter section of the wall of the Baiyu residential complex, across the road from where the victim lived.
At least 20 people have been killed in accidents involving heavy trucks since November last year.
