Woman held in murder case

A WOMAN has been detained for allegedly killing her neighbor, an 86-year-old woman who lived alone, and taking the victim's possessions about one month ago in Putuo District.

Officers said the murder "was brutal" and declined to disclose further details of the crime scene.

The suspect surnamed Xu, 53, was caught on March 25 and some stolen items have been recovered, city police said.

The case has astonished the public, especially neighbors, as they have since learned Xu did not flee the scene after the alleged murder of the elderly woman surnamed Yang.

When policemen arrived on February 25, after Yang's daughter and son-in-law found the woman dead, Xu was seen among the crowd of onlookers, calmly eating an apple, the Youth Daily.

The newspaper report said Xu even agreed to be interviewed.

Neighbors said Xu also turned up one week after Yang's killing to watch the family grieve.

The body of the woman, surnamed Yang, was found lying in the corridor leading to the kitchen in her third floor apartment on Baiyu Road, Putuo, police said.

Witnesses said blood "had been splattered around in the kitchen and in the room."

Xu was later nabbed while playing cards, police said.

According to officers, Xu told police that she tricked Yang into opening the door on February 24 and took her bank card and other stuff.

Neighbors said Xu rented an apartment on the second floor in the building.
