Woman in hit-run fatality detained

THE woman who turned herself in after a fatal hit-and-run accident on Sunday night has been detained and fined by Pudong New Area police and may face further action.

The woman, identified only by her surname of Cheng, would be in custody for 15 days and had been fined 500 yuan (US$73), police said yesterday.

"We have set up a special group to investigate the accident," police said in a press release. "Further action will be taken according to the result of the inspections."

Cheng, 33, said she mishandled the car before crashing into 57-year-old victim Lin Dongchu's electric bike and then caused another two collisions, police said.

Cheng also blamed the accident on faulty brakes.

The local woman walked into a Pudong police station on Monday about noon, nearly 12 hours after the fatal crash.

About 11:15pm on Sunday, Cheng drove her car into the oncoming lane on Hunan Road in Pudong and hit and killed Lin.

Cheng drove on and side-swiped another oncoming car which, in turn, hit a taxi.

Cheng fled the scene after her car lost a front wheel.
