Woman plunges to death after elevator door remains unclosed
THE unclosed door of an elevator shaft led to the death of a 21-year-old woman on Monday, the Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision said yesterday.
The elevator maintenance worker illegally shortened the car's interlock circuit, causing the shaft door to stay open even when the elevator was in motion, said Shen Weimin, deputy director of the bureau.
The victim, who was a staff worker at a local catering company, is believed to have walked into the elevator on the ground level of the building at 188 Huaihai Road M. and somehow fell 6 meters through the gap between the elevator and the wall into the pit. She died instantly.
Shanghai Mitsubishi Elevator Company is responsible for its maintenance and the elevator was still within the quality guarantee period. It was to be serviced next on April 7.
An investigation is ongoing into the incident.
In September, a woman plunged six floors to her death after stepping into an empty shaft inside Hualian Commercial Building.
Repair workers removed a warning sign outside when repairs were being carried out, which caused the tragedy.
