Woman plunges to death as balcony falls
A sixth-floor balcony of a downtown apartment building in Shanghai collapsed suddenly and killed a female resident this noon, police said.
The accident happened around noon in a residential complex on Maotai Road in downtown Changning District. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, police said.
The balcony of the apartment No. 602 caved in and landed on a second floor balcony. Neighbors identified the dead victim as a tenant of the six-floor apartment.
District authorities have started investigation into this rare case to see if any design flaw or malpractice during the building's construction caused the collapse.
It's the first such accident in Shanghai in recent memory. The city's construction inspectors have intensified their quality and safety examinations to prevent unsafe buildings to be sold in the market.
