Woman’s foot fractured in elevator malfunction

A WOMAN suffered severe fractures to her foot yesterday when it became trapped in an apartment block elevator.

The woman, surnamed Bao, was stepping with her left foot into the elevator on the ground floor when it suddenly descended at the Longyuan residential community in Baoshan District around 9am. As it fell, Bao’s foot became trapped under the top of the elevator.

Police and firefighters spent an hour freeing Bao and she was rushed to Changhai Hospital.

She was still undergoing surgery last night due to the severity of the fractures, a doctor at the hospital said.

The elevator was taken out of service and police are investigating.

Longyuan Community was built in 2002.

This was the second elevator accident in the city within a month.

Last month, an eight-year-old girl fell to her death in an elevator shaft at a construction site where her parents worked at Shanghai Everbright City Industrial Zone in Zhabei District.

The girl from Anhui Province had come to Shanghai to see her parents. Her parents said she went out to play alone after lunch and never came back.

City police said they believe that the girl accidentally stepped into the elevator shaft and fell to the bottom.
