Women told to breastfeed baby up to 10-12 months
ABOUT 32 percent of local mothers stop breastfeeding when their child is 6 months old and two thirds of them do so because of their job and concern over figure, rather than physical reasons, a survey shows.
The survey, released today, covered 5,000 new mothers aged 30 to 45 in Shanghai and found 86.2 percent of them offer breastfeeding as a result of education at maternity hospitals and the scandal of melamine-tainted milk. In some hospitals, the rate is over 90 percent.
However, many women stop breastfeeding after six months as they return to work. Jobs require them to look in shape and exert a lot of pressure on them, respondents said.
Doctors said breastfeeding is not only good for baby's health but also good for mothers as it can reduce the possibility of breast cancer.
Dr Li Jian with Shanghai No. 411 Hospital of the People's Liberation Army said new mothers had better breastfeed their child for 10 to 12 months.
