Work starts on pavilion tribute to city business
CONSTRUCTION started yesterday on a pavilion for Shanghai Expo 2010 that will display the spirit of the city's vast business community.
The Shanghai Corporate Pavilion will showcase 40 medium and large corporations under the city's financial authority, the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission.
The Guosheng Group, a state-owned investment company, is sponsor of the pavilion.
The building will be erected on a 4,000-square-meter plot and be an environmentally friendly, transparent cubic structure made from recyclable materials.
Its facade will comprise a new material mainly made from old CDs which can be recycled after the Expo, Guosheng Group's Chairman Shi Derong said yesterday.
The pavilion will use "abstract ways" to highlight the spirit of local corporations, such as positive, forward-looking and innovative, rather than exhibit their products, Shi said.
Its general theme will be "My City, Our Dream."
The pavilion will offer a "dream-like" experience to all visitors, in which "butterflies" will fly around and guide all who enter, said the pavilion's chief designer, Edwin Schlossberg, principal of the United States-based firm ESI Design.
The transformation of the butterfly is one of the most miraculous and beautiful natural processes and is a metaphor for the transformation of local corporations from small to giant, Schlossberg said.
Gu Shuhang, president of the Shanghai Corporate Pavilion, told Shanghai Daily that the cost of the pavilion was not yet known but its budget would not be affected by the global financial crisis.
The pavilion's organizers also unveiled its logo, a white magnolia with blue and green petals symbolizing the harmony between nature and man.
It is the fourth Expo corporate pavilion on which construction has started, following the oil and aviation pavilions and an auto pavilion being jointly built by Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp and General Motors.
All but one of the 16 corporate pavilions the Expo Shanghai organizer plans to build have been confirmed.
