Worker detained over sugar in gas tank

An employee who poured a bag of sugar into the engine of his company’s lorry to take revenge on his boss has been sentenced to five months’ detention for seriously damaging the vehicle, prosecutors in Jinshan District said yesterday.

They said that Zhang, owner of a Jinshan-based logistics company, found he could not start the lorry on March 16 this year. When he looked at the engine he saw sugar crystals and called the police.

Checks of surveillance videos found one of his employees, Wang, behaving suspiciously.

When Wang was questioned by police he confessed to the crime, prosecutors said.

He told police he often argued with Zhang over trifling matters and they had another dispute on March 11. After drinking, he went to the parking lot where the lorry was kept, took off the oil filler cap and poured a bag of sugar in.

The damage to the vehicle was estimated at more than 16,000 yuan (US$2,265). Wang was also ordered to pay compensation to the company.
