Worker dies, bringing accident toll to 3
A WORKER injured in Wednesday's car crash in Pudong New Area has died, putting the death toll at three, police said yesterday.
The worker, 45, suffered skull and brain-stem injuries when rushed to the Renji Hospital on Wednesday. He was declared dead at night despite emergency treatment, the hospital said.
Another victim remained in critical condition last night, and was expected to undergo an amputation in the left leg, according to the hospital.
The cause and responsibility of the fatal accident were still under investigation, the Pudong New Area police said yesterday.
The accident happened about 2pm on Wednesday on the Middle Ring Road in Pudong where a crew of workers was installing road barriers. A car hit the workers' minivan, which then rammed into them.
The workers were from Shanghai Shijie Machinery Manufacturing Co.
Contrary to safety precautions, the injured road-maintenance workers were not wearing outfits with reflective strips and there were no warning signs at the scene, according to witnesses.
City regulations on elevated-road maintenance say the working zone on the highways should be marked with warning signs 100 meters ahead with plastic cones and all workers should wear uniforms with reflective strips and helmets.
The police said the disregard of safety standards in road work has caused some previous accidents, but none as serious as this one.
"It's been a serious problem for years and nothing less than the problem of dump trucks," said Ding Hongqi, a Pudong traffic police officer. "A lot of workers on the highway, no matter whether they are from the road department or environment department, never obey the regulations."
