Workers are poisoned
ONE worker died and another six were found poisoned on Tuesday after moving tons of chemicals the previous night, authorities said.
Wang Xueping, one of the workers, was in critical condition yesterday, said Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital.
The cause of the poisoning remained unclear yesterday, although the main constituent of the powder was confirmed as potassium bisulfate, a low-graded toxic chemical, according to Sun Jianyuan, the doctor treating the victims. "Inhaling potassium bisulfate should not lead to serious poisoning," Sun said.
City police, food and drug administration, health and work safety authorities are all investigating the case.
The alarm was raised when a worker surnamed Liu was discovered dead in Putuo District and the other six victims were found vomiting and losing consciousness.
The workers went to remove 120 tons of potassium bisulfate powder in a warehouse in Qingpu District.
