Workers’ community volunteers help out
China’s earliest workers’ community is celebrating the approaching Chinese New Year with traditional events and voluntary services.
A volunteer bazaar has been launched in the Wuning area of the Caoyang Community in Putuo District, built in the 1950s.
Over 30 volunteers from government bodies and nearby companies are offering free health consultations, haircuts and appliance repairs during the Spring Festival.
Residents are also invited to write down requests on a “wishing wall” for the subdistrict and social organizations to fulfill in the coming year. Many wishes so far cover housing renovations and elderly care.
Residents and people working nearby are also invited to write spring couplets and the character fu (good fortune) as well as guess lantern riddles ahead of the Lantern Festival on February 8.
