Workers recover cash in tons of trash
FOUR sanitation workers touched local residents after spending hours searching in 6 tons of rubbish to retrieve 5,300 yuan (US$850) for an older man whose son accidentally put it into the trash.
Lu Jinbo, a 49-year-old sanitation worker from Anhui Province, said yesterday he and three others workers got an urgent call on Friday afternoon to stop a garbage truck headed to dump its contents.
By the time that the man realized the money was missing, two garbage trucks already had picked up the trash from his home on Wuyuan Road in Xuhui District.
"We thought that it was mission impossible to retrieve the money as each of the two trucks was carrying 5 to 6 tons of garbage and we didn't know which truck had the money," said Lu.
Then they heard one of the trucks already had dumped its garbage.
"We stopped the other truck and searched among the garbage, picking through it with our hands and digging with some tools such as shovels," said Lu.
After three hours, they finally found 300 yuan. "The bills were all sticking to each other but fortunately they were still in good shape. We all got our hopes up," Lu said.
The workers then searched harder in the area where they found the money. Lu said they eventually dug out another 5,000 yuan and delivered the money to its owner, surnamed Yan.
The four workers were lionized after their story was told on Weibo.
"It was unbelievable that they worked in the garbage pile for three hours to find the money. They should be rewarded by their company," said one netizen.
