Workplace attack leaves man with burns to 90 percent of his body
A 27-year-old Shanghai man remains in a critical condition in hospital after being set alight with gasoline by a colleague in Yangpu District on Monday, a local newspaper reported today.
The victim, surnamed Xing, suffered third degree burns to 90 percent of his body, with only the skin only under his armpits and at his bellybutton untouched, according to the Shanghai Morning Post report.
Xing is covered with bandages from head to toe in Changhai Hospital's ICU unit, the report said.
Doctors operated on him immediately after he was admitted on Monday, pouring liquids and blood transfusions into him.
Although Xing is clear-headed now, he can't talk and his parents wait anxiously in the corridor outside his room. "It's very difficult to cure this patient," said Fen Daofeng, a burns unit doctor.
The blaze occurred about 12:15pm on Monday in Fudan Grand Horizon Information Technology Co Ltd's premises on Guotai Road.
It is believed Xing was doused and set ablaze as he was taking a nap in the computer room on the second floor.
Nearby residents said saw smoke billowing from the building as employees ran out in panic.
Xing was later carried out on a stretcher after firefighters brought the blaze under control.
The perpetrator, surnamed Wu, 26, turned himself in about an hour later and confessed he planned the attack after a series of trivial disputes.
Wu told police he carried gasoline into the building about noon on Monday, splashed it over the sleeping Xing, lit the blaze and fled.
Wu, who was also slightly burnt, has been placed in police custody.
