Works begins on new museum

THE construction of the new Shanghai Museum of Natural History began in the Jing'an Sculpture Park this morning.

Dating back 141 years, the Shanghai Museum of Natural History is one of the largest and most famous museums in the country.

Currently the old museum is located in Yan'an Road E., Jing'an District. It is expected that the new one will open late in 2012 or early 2013.

A memory wall which records the past, present and future of the museum was unveiled by city leaders and scientists today. Six bricks in the wall represent samples of the oldest, the most valuable, and new species of plants and animals.

The museum itself will cover 45,086 square meters and the 18-meter-high building will be shaped like a spiral nautilus shell, a living fossil. The shape reflects the way the museum manages our natural heritage and guards the earth, our home.

The highlight will be an oval fountain. Once the new museum is built, the old one will be closed.
