World's fastest rail: 52 mins to Nanjing

SHANGHAI travelers will be able to reach Nanjing within an hour when the world's fastest railway opens in July.

The 300-kilometer railway between the two cities has been laid and will begin tests in May, today's Oriental Morning Post reported.

The line will stop at Shanghai Railway Station and Hongqiao Railway Station, now under construction, as well as another 21 stations in neighboring Jiangsu Province, the report said. Another eight stations will be built later.

The Shanghai-Nanjing trip will be cut to 52 minutes, compared with today's fastest journey of about 2 1/2 hours.

The trains will run at 350 kilometers per hour, the fastest in the world. Trains run at the same speed on the Guangzhou-Wuhan and Beijing-Tianjin lines.

Ticket prices have not been revealed, but are expected to be about 150 yuan (US$22), compared with 93 yuan for a second-class seat now.
