Xiamen rolls the dice Xu Chi

XIAMEN Pavilion is inviting visitors to try their luck in the coastal city's traditional dice game - not only to win various gifts, but to gain a whole year's blessing, according to Xiamen custom.

The dice game, also called "Bo Bing Game," will be presented at the pavilion today at the Urban Best Practices Area of Shanghai World Expo during an exhibition. The pavilion was open for visitors yesterday.

The dice game, one of the unique features of the folk culture of Fujian Province, has been played every Mid-Autumn Festival, or August 15 on China's lunar calendar, in Xiamen for hundreds of years.

Visitors throw the dice, painted with different patterns on each of the six sides, for a chance to win an exotic gift, such as a valuable tea set. But the big prize is left for those who throw four dice with the same designated pattern: they are believed blessed with one year's good luck.

Tomorrow, six musicians from Xiamen's Gulangyu Island will play a concert. Each pavilion visitor will get a souvenir album and a Xiamen guide book.
