Yan’an Road E. Tunnel reopens with better lighting, cleaner air
The Yan’an Road E. Tunnel today reopened to traffic after a nine-month renovation, with better lighting and cleaner air, the city’s road traffic authority announced.
The one of the city’s busiest passages under the Huangpu River had its lighting and ventilation systems upgraded, while new fire alarm and sprinkle system were installed to make it one of the most advanced tunnels in the world with cutting-edge technologies, the Shanghai Road Administration Bureau said.
Drivers can feel fresh breezes when entering the tunnel that was reopened at 1pm today. Engineers have shifted the former transverse ventilation system into the current longitudinal directions, an official with the bureau said. Vehicles will bring in fresh air while some 16 fans will exhaust waste air.
The new design cut the number of fans by half to save the energy consumption while make the effects better, the official added.
Meanwhile, LED lamps were installed on the top of the tunnel to make the light stronger but more comfortable. Some lamps near the exit and entrance of the tunnel simulate the sunlight to make drivers adjust their eyes easier.
The tunnel also has an additional fire escape passage to make the total be five, through which drivers on both directions can reach to the ground in emergency directly.
Foam sprayer systems were added to the tunnel while all the fire distinguishers were upgraded.
Work on the northern section — Pudong to Puxi — started in February this year and finished in mid August, while the three-month work on the southern section of the tunnel — Puxi to Pudong — were completed by middle this month, slightly ahead of schedule.
Nine routes, including Airport Bus Line 5 linking Pudong International Airport to Shanghai Railway Station that had to be rerouted due to the project have restored their original routes today.
