Yellow alert as Shanghai set for coldest day of year
BRACE for the coldest day of the year today with temperatures expected to hit a low of minus 6 degrees Celsius in some areas of Shanghai, weather authorities predicted.
Today’s low will fluctuate around minus 3 degrees in downtown Shanghai, while highs will be around 4 degrees.
China’s National Meteorological Center also issued the first yellow cold alert for the country at 10am yesterday since the warning measures were established in 2013.
It stated that the mercury in most parts of the country’s south will only rise slowly, with continuous cloudy days and little sunshine under the influence of residual forces of the cold front.
The daily average temperature in Shanghai, central and eastern Zhejiang Province, central and western Jiangsu Province and other southern areas is about 5 degrees lower than the same period in previous years, said the center.
Shanghai’s weather bureau issued the lowest-level yellow low-temperature alert on Saturday, and it remains in place.
The city’s emergency bureau has reminded local departments to pay close attention to safety.
The electric, water and gas departments have geared up for supply and maintenance work amid the frigid weather.
State Grid Shanghai Co has been in a level-three (second lowest) emergency response situation.
Drones, visualization probes and other high-tech devices have been deployed for round-the-clock monitoring and observing the conditions of main power lines to prevent failures caused by external force damage.
There are 173 emergency power repair stations across the city. More than 3,500 electricity workers are on 24-hour standby.
More than 800 recovery vehicles and 45 power-generating vehicles have been readied for emergencies.
Residents who have electricity problems are advised to call the State Grid’s emergency hotline 95598.
Students could be given off if the cold persists as the city’s educational authorities have asked schools to be fully prepared for the frigid weather.
Some schools have informed students to wear their own warm clothes, like ski jackets or down coats, instead of uniforms.
Wuning Road Primary School in downtown Putuo District has arranged for the school meals to be delivered straight to the classrooms. They are using an insulation layer on top of the meal box to ensure that students can enjoy warm meals during the freezing climate.
The mercury is forecast to warm up from Wednesday with highs rising to more than 10 degrees and lows around 3 degrees.
