23 million living in Shanghai
SHANGHAI had around 23 million residents last year, a population expert said last night, although the results of November's census won't be officially announced until next month.
The 23 million included around 9 million migrants, said Ding Jinhong, director of East China Normal University's School of Social Development.
Since the previous census in 2005, the city's population has grown by some 600,000 each year, he said.
At last month's session of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference in Shanghai, Ding said the city's population now exceeded its capacity for healthy development and effective population management policies had to be introduced.
