24 local students admitted to top US, UK universities

TWENTY-FOUR high school graduates in Shanghai have received admission offers from top universities in the United States and the United Kingdom this year, local schools announced today.

The Cambridge International Center of Shanghai Normal University, the largest A-level course provider in Shanghai, said 15 out of its 250 graduates have been enrolled by Cambridge and Oxford, and nine by Ivy League universities this year.

The number enrolled by Cambridge and Oxford is two students fewer than in last year but enrolment by elite schools is still on the rise.

The General Certificate of Education Advanced Level, or A-level for short, is accepted as academic qualification and enrollment gauge by universities around the world, including UK, US, Canada, Australia and Hong Kong.

Since 2005, 734 students have been enrolled by foreign elite schools, the center said. Of the total, 324 were admitted by UK universities, 249 by US universities, 147 in Canadian universities, and seven by Australian and Hong Kong schools.
