Ayi salary remains stable

THE average salary for hourly-paid ayis in Shanghai was about 12 yuan (US$1.70) in the past three months, about the same with that of the second quarter of the year. The salary will remain at the level in the near future, said the Shanghai Household Service Association.

Household service companies said that the number of ayi serving in the city is plenty recently, thus the salary will not change much. "With the end of the National Day holiday, the autumn farming work will also end shortly," said Xia Jun, director of the Jialilai Household Service Co Ltd. "Apart from ayis who would stay at their rural homes until next Spring Festival, most of them would come back to Shanghai for work."

The market, however, is lack of ayis bearing nursing skills, especially for seniors. Companies said that because the salary of ayis taking care of new born babies and new mothers is higher than ordinary home maids, more ayis turned to families with new born babies.

"In fact, not many people are willing take care of seniors now," said Zhou Yumin, director of Jinguo Household Service Co Ltd.
