Chefs, nannies lead blue-collars in salary income

Chefs and nannies who take care of new moms and babies are among the best-paid professions in Shanghai which tops other mainland cities in terms of pays for blue-collar workers, a national survey showed today.

An average skilled worker in Shanghai earns 3,479 yuan (US$548) per month, more than a double the city's mandatory 1,450-yuan minimum salary, according to a survey conducted by ganji.cn, a leading service information website.

Chefs, hair dressers, chauffeurs and maternity nannies are the four best-paid blue-collar jobs in Shanghai.

The survey is slanted to workers in the service sector, not workers at construction sites or assembly lines. It found the average salary of blue-collars in major Chinese cities is 2,684 yuan per month.

Beijing and Shenzhen follow Shanghai on the ranking list with salaries of 3,387 yuan and 3,070 yuan, respectively.

The survey also indicated that Beijing is the most sought-after mainland city for blue-collars, followed by Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Chengdu.
