Closure leaves kids at home
AS other children go happily to school, Si Zhanfeng's daughter must stay at home after her kindergarten closed its doors right before the new semester.
The kindergarten, in Putuo District's Changzheng Town, told parents about the closure at 8pm on August 31, one day before the autumn semester was due to begin, leaving more than 60 children with nowhere to go but to stay at home.
Si, 33, said he had been looking for kindergartens after learning the bad news, but none had any vacancies.
Xu Jun, an official with the Changzheng Town government, said they were coordinating with local education bureau. They are considering asking a primary school nearby to vacate several classrooms for the children. And they plan to purchase teaching tools and recruit teachers within one or two weeks.
But the arrangement will only cover children living in the district. Si works in Putuo District but lives in neighboring Jiading District so his daughter may still be without a kindergarten place.
"I'm going to post my story online and ask for help," Si said. He said the head of the kindergarten, surnamed Zhu, should not have informed them so late that they were unable to enroll at other local kindergartens.
Xu said they were tipped off in June that the business license Zhu had did not cover the operation of a kindergarten, and authorities required it to cease operating immediately.
Zhu was unable to be reached yesterday.
