Drowning still top killer of children

DROWNING remained the top killer of children during the summer vacation in Shanghai and one official blamed poor parental supervision for the deaths.
Twenty-four elementary and secondary school students were killed during the summer holiday this year, including 20 who drowned, according to the Shanghai student summer vacation casualty report released yesterday. Of the other four deaths, two died after falling from apartment buildings, one died in a traffic accident and one was crushed with her mother when a wall collapsed in stormy weather.
The number of drowning deaths was nine fewer than last year, but they accounted for 83 percent of the total, almost the same as last year, officials said. Of the 20 deaths, 18 occurred in rivers and two were at water pits on construction sites.
"Parents need to protect their children better," said Lue Hui, an official with the teenager protection department of the Shanghai Education Commission. "During the summer holiday period, it is up to parents to supervise their children rather than the schools."
In April, city education authorities asked schools to add swimming lessons to sports classes. The goal is to ensure every student in the city can swim within five years.
Meanwhile, Songjiang District police issue free tickets to swimming pools when they spot people swimming in rivers to ensure people can swim in supervised facilities.
