Few Chinese-language teachers opt to work abroad despite huge demand
DESPITE a huge demand for Chinese language teachers globally, only a few local graduates went abroad after studying how to teach Chinese to foreigners, while most teach at local schools and language institutes, experts said at a seminar in Shanghai today.
It is estimated that there are about 150 million overseas Chinese learners, creating a gigantic shortage of Chinese language teachers estimated at over 5 million.
The shortage has attracted many students to apply for studies in teaching foreigners Chinese in recent years, hoping to get experience working abroad. However, many graduates choose domestic jobs because they want to stay close to their families, officials said.
The seminar was organized by the Institute of Global Chinese Language Teacher Education, affiliated with East China Normal University.
