Firm backflips over job bias
A COMPANY that caused a controversy by excluding Shanghai natives in their recruitment ads has removed the requirement at the request of the Minhang District human resources authorities, which said the ads, while not illegal, were inappropriate.
The Shanghai Honest Vehicle Maintenance Co Ltd made an announcement yesterday, saying they only intended to balance its high proportion of local employees.
Having held a recruitment targeting only Shanghai natives, the company said it wanted to give more chances to city outsiders.
In the ads that appeared on recruitment Websites on July 13, the company excluded Shanghai natives from every position.
The ads created widespread online discussion, with some people saying the company could save on social security payments by hiring non-Shanghai natives.
However, the company's announcement conflicted with the explanation it had given to Minhang District's human resources and social security bureau.
"They first said to us it was a typing mistake," said an official surnamed Hu from the Minhang District human resources authorities.
