Foreign teachers give Advanced Placement prep course

More than 100 domestic and foreign teachers participated in a two-day Advanced Placement training program at Shanghai High School on Saturday to share teaching experiences and discuss how to improve teaching methods.

The AP program, popular in the United States and Canada, allows high school students to study college-level courses. Their results in AP courses can be a useful reference when they apply to North American colleges. Students completing AP courses will also be granted course credits at most colleges.

More than 100 Chinese high schools, including Shanghai High School, have thus far been authorized to open AP courses. Chinese students who plan to study overseas can benefit by experiencing a North American teaching style in advance.

Li Yunuo, world history teacher at Shanghai High School International Division, said AP courses help students develop thinking skills instead of just filling them with knowledge.

For example, in the training workshop, a foreign teacher displayed an ancient Chinese painting which he used to help students learn about the geography and social situation at that time.

Shanghai High School started to teach AP courses in 2008. It now teaches 17 such courses including computer science, English and English literature, psychology and world history.
