Free class offer for students left in lurch

STUDENTS left in the lurch when a cram school chain closed suddenly last week have been offered free classes by a one-time competitor.

An agreement was signed on Tuesday between Shanghai New Oriental School and Yisi Training, which ran out of money and closed all of its 30 or so branches last Wednesday.

In a joint statement, New Oriental said it will offer free classes to students who didn’t complete pre-paid classes with Yisi.

Some students will resume classes this weekend, said Shanghai New Oriental.

Shanghai New Oriental said that it was lending a hand to help Yisi Training out of social responsibility as an industry peer.

It will not help Yisi Training pay debts or refund tuition fees, stressed Kong Jianlong, deputy principal of Shanghai New Oriental.

Education training centers like these schools offer courses in subjects such as Chinese, English and mathematics to help middle and high school students improve grades and prepare for the college entrance exam.
