Fudan job fair attracts thousands of students
A JOB fair held at Fudan University today attracted thousands of local university students, even though it has been at least the fifth large-scale job fair targeting students in Shanghai since early this month.
Some students said they hadn’t gotten a response from companies after handing in their resumes at the previous job fairs. They said they attended because this is their only channel to meet recruiters, and online applications get even fewer replies.
Ye Chao, a senior law student at Fudan University, said she was not confident because she failed the national bar exam this year and didn’t pass the interviews of many big-name companies.
“Even if I take the exam again, I need to find a job first,” Ye told Shanghai Daily. She said the job market for law graduates is fierce because many judicial departments prefer postgraduates.
Ye said she is looking for a monthly salary of 2,000 yuan (US$328) to 3,000 yuan.
Schools and companies in the automobile, finance and pharmaceutical industries are very sought after by students, with many lining up in long queues to hand in their resumes.
Some companies did on-site English-language interviews and others took photos of the students to make it easier to keep up with the candidates they want and save time.
“Our school has a very high requirement for English and it is unnecessary for us to meet students whose English is not very good,” said Cai Jian, a teacher at Shanghai Starriver Bilingual School.
To attract elite students, some companies advertised high salaries on posters. For example, Ao Hai Real Estate Group offered an annual salary of up to 200,000 yuan for positions including finance, trade, design and engineering management.
Tao Guangqing, a human resources specialist with the real estate group, said the company offers a higher salary to students who are willing to go to small cities.
