Horror as student falls to her dealth
A FEMALE student allegedly jumped to her death at a university yesterday morning, after a "Goodbye" SMS message was texted to her teacher.
The postgraduate student, who was to graduate next March, is believed to have jumped from the 12th floor of Building No. 1 at Shanghai International Studies University's Hongkou District campus about 10:30am.
The victim was a student in the English Department and fellow students suspect that she might have killed herself over a love affair - but the reason for her apparent suicide is still under investigation.
Shanghai Daily contacted her counselor, Mi Jian, but he declined to comment.
The building at the university has classrooms and teachers' offices inside and many students were in class when the incident happened.
A witness took a photograph of the scene and uploaded it onto a microblog on t.sina.com.cn.
A witness identifying herself as "Coral" told Shanghai Daily that the front door of the building was blocked when she tried to leave at 10:40am.
"Many teachers were talking to each other. They told me that the door was closed because of an investigation into a theft," she said.
She left by a side entrance and found many police officers on the site.
Another witness surnamed Tang said: "When I went downstairs, it was noisy outside the building. Looking out of the window, I was shocked to see a white shroud stained with blood and there was a lot of blood on the ground."
"Several teachers and policemen asked me to leave the building and told me not to spread the news to others. Then they came to block the windows overlooking the scene," she added.
One of the victim's classmates, surnamed Chen, said: "She is a nice and active girl, and does well in studies. Recently she is suffering a lot from a relationship crisis."
University officials said teachers will offer psychological comfort and counseling to the dead woman's classmates.
Suicide has been the leading cause of death for the city's college students since the education authorities released a college student safety report in 2009.
Thirteen local college students, including one foreign student, took their lives in 2009. That surpassed acute disease and drowning as the main cause of death in college students.
Last year's figure has not been released yet.
