Local school students in battle of the bulge: survey

ABOUT one in every four youngsters in Shanghai, aged between seven and 18, is overweight or obese, a study has found.

Renji Hospital doctors examined over 3,000 students from six local schools and found that 24.6 percent of them were overweight or suffering from obesity, officials said yesterday.

"Obesity has become an epidemic among youngsters," said a nutrition doctor surnamed Zhang at the hospital, who was in the study's research team.

The study found overweight and obese students have a higher risk of contracting high blood pressure and fatty liver disease. "Overweight students are generally absorbing too much energy as living conditions improve," said Jiang Xiaoming, another nutrition doctor at the hospital.

In response, the Shanghai Education Commission plans to introduce an obesity prevention intervention program in local schools. Doctors will visit schools to instruct parents about healthy life habits and guide schools on making health recipes for meals. Students will be asked to write a diary to record what they eat and doctors will provide advice to them based on the diaries.
