Medical school out to set new standards
THE country’s first medical school offering an education program based on North American standards was launched in Shanghai yesterday.
The Ottawa-Shanghai Joint School of Medicine, based at Renji Hospital, aims to improve the quality of training provided to student doctors as well as helping the internationalization of China’s hospitals.
The school is a joint venture between the medical faculties of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the University of Ottawa. Its curriculum will be delivered by teachers from both institutions, while the school will also provide a base for research.
The first students will enrol next year, said Dean Chen Guoqiang, adding that many young medics will go on to do their residencies in Canada.
“The training system for medical students is more mature in North America than it is in China,” Chen said.
“We want to improve that system, and broaden the knowledge and capabilities of our future doctors,” he said.
“For example, medical programs in North America focus not only on clinical knowledge but also on things like communication skills and information gathering, all of which are lacking from Chinese curricula.”
University officials said they hope that as more Chinese doctors are trained to international standards, the country’s hospitals will get more recognition from foreign patients and insurance companies.
